At my computing class, we were practising with gimp. First I was like a fish out of water. But little by little I was learning, and at the end I've done this:
I really had fun making this, although the silhouette is a bit inaccurate to the original image but personally speaking the result is quite good. :)
I agree with you about your silhouette being a bit rough, next time take your time with the lasso tool.
